SHANGHAI FACE

Shanghai’s face looks Western to the Chinese, and Chinese to the Westerners. It is neither; it is both. This famous port city is a portrait of an open, restless, and yearning China.
There are no walls. Shanghai only faces running water, streams, rivers and one vast ocean.
If Shanghai is a door, it opens outwards.
People that long for adventure and opportunity from everywhere in the world, not just China, gather in Shanghai.
This is the reason for Shanghai’s constant discontent, its constant change. But at the same time, one should not forget that located between Suzhou and Hangzhou, Shanghai has the typical characteristics of Southerner, elegance and refinement in weather that is always humid.
So many elements converge here: western-style houses and narrow Chinese lanes; broad avenues and the global Internet; the Bund to Chenhuang Taoist Temple. Shanghai packs these innumerable features into one big knapsack, as if it is preparing to pick up and go with them at a moment’s notice.
Shanghai’s roots are as a wharf and port city.
Almost everywhere in the city you can hear the muffled horns of ocean-going vessels, but in this aviation era, who knows what they are calling to? High buildings reach ever higher.
When I was young, Shanghai was lethargic—it fell asleep in the 20s and had barely awoken in the 60’s. Nanjing Road was a sea of red. All the eye could see was red flags and people. Not a single neon lamp.
No bridge crossed the Huangpu River.
At that time, even Dashijie dared not open because of its reputed decadence.
But now, Nanjing Road is pedestrianized and Spring in Paris is on Huaihai Road. In an ironic turn, shikumen now play host to elegant decadence at Xintiandi. Huangpu River will soon get its fifth bridge.
Buildings in Pudong have reached 88 floors but Shanghai is still not satisfied.
Shanghai is awake again, and is determined to party all night long.
There is a strong spirit with people coming from all over, bringing prosperity and color no matter how long or short their stay.
Many many faces.
